Applications are now open for the Jewish Music Class for Hilary Term 2026

The Sound of the kley zemer. Jewish instrumental music after 1800 – Part 1

Online course via Zoom on Mondays 18:15 to 19:15 (UK time)

Tutor: Dr Diana Matut

In Hilary Term 2026, Dr Diana Matut will teach the following Jewish music course entitled, ‘The Sound of the kley zemer. Jewish instrumental music after 1800 – Part 1’.

Although vocal music is intimately linked to the Jewish experience, instruments and instrumental music have been part of Jewish culture since Biblical times. This term, we will explore the history of instruments in Jewish contexts, their usage, prohibitions and surrounding social and religious discussions as well as Jewish instrumental music written after 1800. This is the first of two parts exploring instrumental musics after 1800.
