Yiddish

Class Level: Beginners

Class Schedule 2022-23: Wednesdays from 12:00-13:00 UK Time, beginning during the week of 10 October 2022

Class Length: 3-term class (Michaelmas Term 2022-Trinity Term 2023)

Class Description: This is a class designed for students with no prior knowledge of Yiddish, although knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet would be highly desirable. We will start each class with some easy Yiddish conversation; then we will work on Sheva Zucker’s textbook, Yiddish, Vol. 1, starting from Unit 1; and we will finish each class with a Yiddish song.

Class Level: Advanced Beginners

Class Schedule 2022-23: Mondays from 14:30-15:30 UK Time, beginning during the week of 24 October 2022

Class Length: 3-term class (Michaelmas Term 2022-Trinity Term 2023)

Class Description: This is a class designed for students who are able to read Yiddish and form simple sentences in the present tense and the past tense, conjugated with ‘hobn’. We will start each class with some Yiddish conversation; then we will work on Sheva Zucker’s textbook, Yiddish, Vol. 1, starting from Unit 8 B (also going back to Unit 8 A for some revision); and we will finish each class with a Yiddish song.

Class Level: Lower Intermediate

Class Schedule 2022-23: Mondays from 15:45-16:45 UK Time, beginning during the week of 24 October 2022

Class Length: 3-term class (Michaelmas Term 2022-Trinity Term 2023)

Class Description: This is a class designed for students who are able to read Yiddish and form sentences in the present, past and future tense. We will start each class with some Yiddish conversation; then we will work on Sheva Zucker’s textbook, Yiddish, Vol. 1, starting from the end of Unit 11 A, and going on to Yiddish, Vol. 2, once we complete the first textbook. We will finish each class with a Yiddish song.

Class Level: Yiddish Literature

Class Schedule 2022-23: Mondays from 17:00-18:00 UK Time, beginning during the week of 24 October 2022

Class Length: 3-term class (Michaelmas Term 2022-Trinity Term 2023)

Class Description: This is a class designed for students who read Yiddish fluently and are able to read Yiddish literature. We will start each class with some Yiddish conversation, then we will read some Yiddish literature together (all texts will be provided prior to the class) and we will finish each class with a Yiddish song.
