Constantijn L'Empereur, Paraphrasis Don Iosephi Iachiadae in Danielem, Amsterdam: Ioannes Ianssonius, 1733.
Constantijn L'Empereur was the professor of theology and Hebrew at the Leiden University and a much respected Christian Hebraist. The super-commentary on R. Yosef ben David ibn Yahya's commentary on Daniel was his first work on rabbinics. It contains ibn Yahya's Hebrew text and its Latin translation as well as L'Empereur's commentary in Latin. The title page of our copy bears a signature of one Granville Sharp, who may be identical with Grandville Sharp, a pioneer in the abolition of slavery in Britain. Sharp (1735-1813) was interested in biblical scholarship, antiquarianism and linguistics, and knew Greek and Hebrew. He was a member of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel and the first chairman of the British and Foreign Bible Society.
