Object 13. Lowe's Near Eastern and Far Eastern Calendars

1935

Description:

In 1935 James published a calendar for that year with the dates according to the Christian, Muslim, Persian, Chinese, Coptic, and Jewish systems. The volume includes a supplement about Oriental Calligraphy, and important Firmans and charters about the rights of these groups. James chose the alternative spelling of the surname Loewe, meaning lion in German. The lion was a symbol adopted by Louis and Raphael Loewe.

The book builds on some of his father, Louis Loewe’s work. He, like his father, discusses the etymology of Moses and argues that the Coptic, hieroglyphic and Hebrew pronunciation of ‘Moses’ would have been the same but the spelling was different, therefore Moses can be a Hebrew and an Egyptian name.

In the book there are reproductions and translations of charters which grant Jews certain rights, including one from the Shah of Persia, 1873, securing their protection, and another from the Sultan of Morocco, 1864.
