Raphael Loewe, 1919-2011, was born in Calcutta shortly after the end of the First World War. Raphael completed a classics degree at St John’s College, Cambridge in 1942. He was then drafted and was awarded the Military Cross for bravery and his right leg was badly wounded. Returning to Britain he taught at the University of Leeds, Cambridge University, and then joined the Hebrew and Jewish Studies Department at University College London in 1961, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. He was appointed Goldsmid Professor in 1981. Raphael researched and published widely on Judaism and Jewish thought, particularly focusing on medieval Hebrew poetry, liturgy and translation.  His last book was a collection of his own poetry as well as translations from and into many languages including Latin, Hebrew and Greek.
