Object 1. Letter from Raphael, to his father, Herbert

Hanukah, Dec. 8th [year ?]

Description:

Letter in pencil from little Raphael to his father, Herbert Loewe. Written on a postcard with pre-printed header: "H. Loewe, 29 Beaumont Street, Oxford".

In the letter, Raphael asks for coloured candles for his granny for Hanukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, celebrated annually around December. The name of the festival is written in Hebrew letters, some are inverted, two are transposed: Hakunah instead of Hanukah. On verso, Raphael drew a train.

The family lived in Oxford during Raphael's primary years; this is also where he went to elementary school (Dragon School, Oxford).
