Object 6. Translator's workshop - "Adon Olam"

1962

Description:

Raphael’s translation into Latin of Adon ‘Olam, the liturgical hymn. Academically his poetic interest lay in medieval manuscripts, liturgy and poetry. He was a poet and translator, and sent cards such as this to friends, family and colleagues, with examples of his work. This card was sent in 1962 for Christmas and Hanukah, but the accompanying explanation sheet was sent out to members of the academic community at a later date.

The English translation is by Philip Hartog, but the Latin version in alcaic verse form is his own.  There are other Latin versions of this hymn including one made by his father Herbert Loewe in 1889 when he was still a student.  The printer’s plate is of the pointed Hebrew text and the accompanying etching was designed by Diana Bloomfield.
