In his controversial treatise of 1793 Etwas zur Charackteristick der Juden
(Notes regarding the characteristics of the Jews), he characterized four groups
that, in his view, made up contemporary Jewish society as it faced the
challenges of modernization: the majority group of 'unreformable' Jews (...),
the libertines (...), the group of decent moral Jews who still clung to
unreformed Judaism (...) and the small group of 'truly enlightened' (...)
of which he saw himself as a representative*
