Object 13. Louis Loewe's Certificate of Naturalization

2nd July 1862

Description:

The Certificate of Naturalization was accompanied by a cover letter (large image on the right) starting with the following words:

"Sir, I am directed by the Secretary of State to transmit to you herewith the Certificate of Naturalization, which he has been pleased to grant to you in pursuance of your request ... [signed] A. Waddington"

Louis Loewe applied for naturalization at the age of 52, already as a father of five, after twenty five years of residing in England. At the time of application he lived at 46-48 Buckingham Place in Brighton, Sussex, where he had presided over the Boarding School for Jewish Boys since 1861. On the 16th of July 1862, Loewe swore the Oath of Allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Although he moved residences a couple of times, he remained in England until his death in 1888, his offspring British subjects by law.
