E A Lowe Lectures in Palaeography 2020
The Hebrew-Latin Manuscripts of the Library of Corpus Christi College
Professor Judith Schlanger will deliver the E A Lowe Lectures at 5pm on the following days in the MBI Al Jaber Auditorium, Corpus Christi College. Professor Schlanger, FBA, is President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, Fellow of Corpus Christi College, and Professor of Hebrew Manuscript Studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, Paris. Her research interests include Hebrew palaeography, the analysis of legal documents in Hebrew characters in different parts of the medieval Jewish world from the Cairo Geniza to medieval England, and the study of Jewish book cultures and their contacts with non-Jewish intellectual environments in the East and the West.
Tuesday 25 February – “Two nations in their mother’s womb” – Hebrew-Latin manuscripts, their materiality and their purpose
Thursday 27 February – “Hold on to the garment of a Jew” – bilingual manuscripts, their glosses and their Jewish background
Tuesday 3 March – From “superscriptio Lincolniensis” to Prior Gregory – the difficult question of manuscripts’ provenance.
The first lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Rainolds Room and the third lecture by a drinks reception in the Auditorium Foyer.
